地元の人たちはオークランドを繋がった遊び場みたいに走ってるよ。Tamaki DriveはダウンタウンからSt Heliersまで、フラットなZ2とかロングのイージーランにぴったり。Mount Edenはロード、パス、トレイル合わせて5kmで約240mアップする。445 RUN CLUB、Auckland Joggers Club、Balance Run Club、NARC、The Y Marathon Clubとかのクラブが毎週盛り上げてくれてるし、Runaway Auckland Marathon、Tāmaki River Half Marathon、Onehunga Half Marathon、Step Up Sky Tower Challengeとかがカレンダーのメインイベントだね。

こっちの人はウォーターフロントのパスから本格的なグラベルまで、何でも乗ってるよ。Northwestern cyclewayは比較的フラットだし、Westhaven Path、City to Bays path、Devonport to Takapuna path、Pakuranga Rotary Pathなんかもbase miles稼ぎたい時に手軽に走れる。CBDからPort Waikatoまでは車で1時間くらいだけど、そこのグラベルは130kmで2,638m gainとかあって、全然楽じゃないんだよね。Puhoi Loop、Riverhead-Muriwai Loop、Whangaripo Loop、Big Coast Loopあたりはクライムたっぷり。Muriwaiはブッシュトレイルみたいな登りもあって面白いよ。Bike Auckland、Bike Burbs、Auckland Mountain Bike Club、Grey Lynn Cycle Club、North Harbour Cycling Clubとかのクラブが、crit、MTB、gran fondo好きの人たちを繋いでくれてる。

オークランドは夏が一番いい時期だよ。暖かい日が多くて、2月の海水温が快適だし、天気が安定してると地峡は早朝が穏やか。地元の人たちは早めにスタートするんだ。海風が午前中から吹き始めて、夕方には収まることが多いからね。ランナーはTamaki Drive、Westhaven Marina、Ōrākei Basinでコントロールされた練習をするし、ライダーはフラットなパスで足慣らししてから西や南東の丘を攻める感じ。冬は穏やかだけど、8月が一番海水が冷たいし、Waitākere Rangesは泥だらけで根っこだらけのtechnicalなコースになることもある。でも、ちゃんとウェアを選べば、Z2、cyclocross legs、ブッシュランニング、singletrackも全然いける時期だよ。
