The Berenloop Terschelling Marathon takes place on Terschelling, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, offering both a full and a half marathon. The full marathon begins in West-Terschelling and concludes at Brandarisplein, near the island’s well-known lighthouse square. This is not a large-city road marathon; the full distance is limited to 1,000 participants, and the half marathon accommodates up to 4,250. These limits are firm, with a five-hour time limit for the marathon and three hours for the half, along with mid-race cut-offs on the full course.
The route showcases much of Terschelling within a single day, including the harbor, villages, the Boschplaat nature reserve, dunes, shell paths, and approximately three kilometers on the beach. The majority of the course consists of flat asphalt or gently undulating shell paths. However, the beach segment can significantly increase the marathon's difficulty, and in severe weather conditions, an alternative route may be used. The event has the feel of an island-wide gathering, with residents participating as runners, volunteers, and spectators. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three male and female finishers in both primary races, with bonuses for course records, age-group awards, and a distinct Terschelling Championship presentation.
