Dwars Door Duizend is a three-day trail run from Rheden to Driebergen, covering about 100 kilometers with over 1,000 meters of climbing. Participants camp out for two nights along the route, positioning it between a stage race and a fast hiking trip. Runners cover distance each day, camp in natural settings, and progress across the Netherlands rather than returning to a single start point. The field is limited to 150 people, making it a smaller event compared to large road races.
The course crosses from the Veluwe toward the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, utilizing trails, forests, hills, and nature reserves in Gelderland and Utrecht. Specific sections may include the Veluwezoom, ancient glacial ridges, and the forested highlands of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with mud and uneven ground expected. Baggage transport and communal meals are provided, reducing the need for runners to carry full camping gear, yet the event maintains a self-sufficient outdoor character.
