Approximately half of the Katerloop’s 5 km route in Numansdorp crosses muddy grass, featuring puddles and molehills to navigate. The New Year’s Day run commences and concludes at N.S.V.V./A.V. Cromstrijen on Wilhelminastraat. A.V. Cromstrijen organizes it as a low-key recreational race. Entry is inexpensive, with a modest discount for early registration, and all participants receive a commemorative cup.
The course begins on paved roads before directing runners onto two rugged grass loops around the 1.2 km mark. The route rejoins the paved road just before the 4 km point, typically a welcome change after the slick middle section. Fields are small and local; one running had 19 starters, with the quickest finisher in just over 21 minutes and the first woman in just over 23 minutes. The race is still in its early years, with its fourth edition approaching, giving it the feel of a community start to the year rather than a major road event.
