The Lopster Torenloop begins and ends on the Marktplein by the tower in Loppersum, a village in Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. It is a village running event featuring a 5 km recreational run, a 10 km race, and separate children’s events before the main distances. The youth program starts with short laps around the tower, with primary-school distances of 400, 600, and 1,200 metres based on age group.
The longer routes traverse the village and nearby woodland, with music along the course and medals for participants. The most local tradition is the Ranja Race, a team relay where runners carry a large jug of ranja, the Dutch fruit syrup drink, around a lap; teams can represent local companies or associations. Registration, late entries, changing facilities, and bib collection are managed at the Vredekerk, and the event has seen growth, with hundreds of runners in the 5 km and 10 km fields.
