Meint Beukema Classic

The Meint Beukema Classic is a mountain bike tour in Surhuizum, organized by the Surhúster Fyts Ploechje. It began at 9:30 on a dry Thursday morning and is named for Meint Beukema, who participated at age 70 and finished the 59-kilometer route. The course was planned for 60 kilometers, but wet ground necessitated a change as some sections were not approved for use. Many riders completed the MTB tour. Beukema encountered acquaintances on the route, including Bob de Vries and Pim Cazemier; he previously trained in skating and rollerblading with De Vries before De Vries became the faster athlete.
