Winter Triathlon Leeuwarden is a winter multisport race based at the 11Stedenhal in Leeuwarden, Friesland. Instead of the usual swim-bike-run triathlon format, it uses running, cycling, and skating, with the ice rink as the final discipline. The event is also run as the Open Fries Kampioenschap WinterTriathlon and offers four distances across nine categories, so it covers children, youth racers, adults, solo athletes, and trio or team entries.
The race starts with running on the square, moves into the cycling leg, and ends on the 11Stedenhal ice. That last part gives the event its local feel: the rink is rented exclusively for competitors during the race, and the skating finish is the part people build toward all day. Fixed changeovers make the transitions a real part of the challenge, but there is no time limit, so the format suits both competitive winter athletes and people who mainly want to try the switch from shoes to bike to skates without being rushed.
