The Østmarka Trail Challenge - Flyktningeruta is a 37 km trail race crossing Østmarka, the forest region east of Oslo. Beginning waterside at Skøyen gård near Øyeren and concluding at Skullerudstua, the course covers a significant expanse of forest rather than a park loop. This event is suited for those who appreciate challenging trail running: the route features dense woods, sharp ascents, steep descents, mud, roots, stones, brush, and marshy terrain. A demanding hill appears shortly after the start, establishing the race's demanding character early on.
The initial part may feature simpler forest roads, but the course quickly requires focus alongside physical conditioning. Participants navigate overgrown fields and wet terrain, with some segments potentially involving deep mud. The nature reserve trails are particularly taxing, and the latter portion from Bjønnebete via Sør-Skytten, Smørhølet, and Østmarkakapellet is noted for its extreme difficulty. The pre-race atmosphere is calm, and on the course, runners might experience extended periods alone while still encountering others for brief exchanges. Course markings have historically been sparse, necessitating attention to both footing and navigation.
