Svalandsgubben is a demanding off-road race held over Svalandsheia in Birkenes, southern Norway. It takes place annually on the last Sunday in October, having been run since 1974. This event tests strength on difficult terrain, unlike a smooth road race, attracting elite runners, club members, amateurs, and many participants focused on completing the course.
The route forms a circuit across South Norwegian highland terrain, featuring challenging ground and moments of open heath for those with the energy to appreciate them. Kristian Svaland established the race following a discussion during cherry picking at his farm on Svalandsheia. The start is marked by a local tradition: a Mauser shot to send the runners off.
