From the Whitby car park near the centre of Wakefield, the Dovedale Hill Race heads out along Pigeon Valley Road toward the top of Dovedale Hill. It is a classic local 11km run/walk in the old-school sense: simple setup, honest climbing, and no need to dress it up beyond the road in front of you.
The course starts on sealed road before transitioning to gravel, then keeps climbing steadily over the final 5km through narrow, winding sections and increasing elevation. It suits runners and walkers who are happy on open roads and want a straightforward but physically demanding road climb, with the one-way finish adding its own quirk: jog back down by forestry roads and Pigeon Valley Road, or sort a carpool and leave a vehicle at the top before you start.
