The Kirikiriroa Marathon begins and ends at the Rhododendron Lawn in Hamilton Gardens. All distances utilize the Te Awa River Path alongside the Waikato River. The event includes a solo 42.2 km marathon, a 42.2 km team relay for two to four participants, and a 21.1 km half marathon. It is designed for both runners and walkers, featuring an eight-hour time limit for the marathon and no specified limit for the half marathon.
The half marathon route extends out and back from Hamilton Gardens to Tamahere. The marathon route incorporates more of the riverside path network. The course surface varies between pavers, concrete paths, shared paths, and wooden boardwalks. Modern bridges and gradual inclines and declines introduce variation, distinguishing it from a flat road race. Relay teams divide the marathon into approximately 10 to 11 km legs, with changeovers at designated points. This format is suitable for friends wishing to participate in marathon day without completing the full distance individually. A local volunteer committee organizes the event, catering to first-time marathoners, walkers, goal-oriented half marathoners, and teams sharing the experience.
