The Marokopa Munter is a navigation adventure race held around Marokopa on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, in the Waikato region. Teams navigate rugged farmland, native bush, rivers, and coastal terrain using Topo50 maps and a compass. Trekking and mountain biking are central, with paddling included for teams bringing packrafts or kayaks. The options are a 12-hour race for teams of two, three, or four, and 24-hour races for four-person teams, featuring separate paddling and non-paddling divisions. Both races commence Saturday morning following registration and a briefing at Marokopa Community Hall.
The 12-hour race suits developing teams and intermediate racers, incorporating rogaine-style sections where teams select checkpoints before time expires. The 24-hour paddling division includes kayaking or packrafting, sending teams through remote terrain overnight, emphasizing route choice, navigation, and endurance. The non-paddling 24-hour division substitutes water sections with additional trekking or biking. Adventure racers and multisport athletes are the intended participants, and the event includes mystery activities, preventing teams from knowing all tasks beforehand. This tenth running marks the race's conclusion.
