Starting from the visitor centre carpark at Orokonui Ecosanctuary, the Orokonui Challenge Run offers a local mixed-terrain feel, distinct from a polished road race. Participants run along part of the Orokonui fence line, ascend the side of Mōpanui, and gain continuous views as the route navigates between the sanctuary, coast, and inlet.
Underfoot conditions vary: compacted gravel, grass, beach, asphalt, and coarse gravel suggest road shoes with good grip are advisable. The most appealing section is reportedly the coastal run from Pūrākaunui to Doctors Point, followed by a path past the Orokonui inlet and a return to the sanctuary for a final climb through its protected forest. The event also serves a significant purpose, with proceeds aiding biodiversity and Orokonui’s efforts in wildlife advocacy and conservation.
