Arataki Visitors Centre offers a park-day atmosphere: children are outdoors, moving between checkpoints, and engaging their minds as much as their bodies. The Schools Sustainability Challenge is a two-hour outdoor event for teams of four students in Years 5-8, with a teacher or parent accompanying them as they navigate the course.
Rather than focusing on speed, teams move around the park to visit as many checkpoints as possible, then complete sustainability-themed activities that assess knowledge and teamwork. The activities are practical: identifying native bird calls, matching pests to traps, and crafting items from natural materials like flax, all centered on kaitiakitanga and ecological stewardship. Awards for the top three teams and random spot prizes follow, maintaining a school-event energy while retaining the outdoor adventure feel.
