Auckland Botanic Gardens hosts this event, where teams of four students in Years 5-8 navigate the park in a low-key adventure race. The Schools Sustainability Challenge is a two-hour outdoor navigation and activity event, fostering muddy-shoes teamwork rather than start-line nerves. A teacher or parent accompanies each team, providing a good introduction to navigating under pressure without excessive seriousness.
The objective is straightforward: tour the park, visit as many checkpoints as possible, and collect points. Bonus points are earned through sustainability-themed challenges, such as identifying native bird calls, matching pests to traps, or crafting items from flax. Awards are given to the top three teams and through random drawings, but the core appeal lies in combining environmental awareness, physical activity, and stewardship in a practical, engaging manner.
