The Costa Nova Triathlon begins and ends in Costa Nova do Prado, Aveiro, with participants starting in the late afternoon. It's an Olympic-distance event: a 1,500 m swim, 40 km bike ride, and 10 km run. Individuals can compete solo or in relay teams, opening the field to more than just experienced triathletes completing the full race alone. Chip timing is employed, and the race has a 4-hour overall cut-off. Cyclists must complete the bike segment within 3 hours of the start.
The swim takes place in the ria, commencing between the garden and the Clube de Vela da Costa Nova. The bike course consists of four out-and-back laps from Costa Nova to the first Vagueira roundabout, allowing supporters to view riders multiple times. The run route stays near the transition area, utilizing the bike path and pedestrian walkway around the Jardim of Costa Nova, alongside the ria. Age-group categories range from teenage divisions to 70-plus, with a paratriathlete category for younger competitors. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age group and team.
