The Estrela Road Challenge is a mountain road running series in Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range, with events based around Manteigas and usually run in October. Its shortest race, the Uphill, covers 21 km and gains 1600 m from the Municipality building in Manteigas to Torre, the range’s high point at 1993 m. Runners seeking the full version can choose the 42 km Uphill + Downhill, a marathon-distance road race with 3200 m of total elevation change.
The series follows a straightforward concept: climb hard from town into the mountains, then either stop at the summit or run the descent back to Manteigas. The relay uses the same 42 km route, with one runner handling the climb and another taking the downhill section; some versions allow teams of up to three athletes. Entry is for runners aged 18 or over. Estrela Outdoor Events organizes the race, linking its mountain setting with environmental sustainability, solidarity, and fair sporting conduct.
