Estrela Xtreme Triathlon begins at approximately 1,430 metres altitude within Portugal’s Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The race features open-water swimming, mountain cycling, and a demanding run. It takes place in September and provides Full, Half, and Starter distances. Athletes can select from a 1 km swim, 53 km bike, and 15 km run, up to a Full Distance comprising a 4 km swim, 190 km cycle, and 41 km run.
The swim occurs in Lagoa do Vale do Rossim. Subsequently, the bike course navigates steep mountain roads, passing through one of Europe’s largest ancient glacial valleys and ascending to Torre, mainland Portugal’s highest summit. The Half Distance includes a 2 km swim, a 105 km bike segment with 2,600 metres of elevation gain, and a 21 km run, balanced between uphill and downhill sections. Relay teams are permitted for this distance. The event attracts participants from beyond Portugal and is known for challenging athletes' endurance and composure, particularly on the long descents, sharp turns, and significant elevation changes.
