Lisboa Backyard Ultra is a last-runner-standing ultramarathon in Lisbon's Monsanto Park, following the Backyard Ultra format: runners complete a 6.706 km lap, then begin the next lap exactly one hour later. Finishing a lap quickly grants more time for rest, food, and preparation before the subsequent start; finishing near the hour mark leaves minimal break time. The race concludes when only one runner can complete a lap, emphasizing pacing, recovery, and mental fortitude over outright speed as the number of participants diminishes.
The race is centered around a single start and finish area within Monsanto Park, one of Europe's largest urban forests. Support is restricted to this zone, and rules on pacing and outside aid make each lap a combination of running and strategic planning. Runners have access to restrooms and water at the event site, and may erect small or medium tents in the start/finish area if space permits. The event welcomes all participants, though its format particularly suits those capable of sustaining a controlled effort for extended periods while managing nutrition, rest, and mental challenges between laps.
