Trail das Masseiras

The Trail das Masseiras begins and ends at the Aguçadoura football pitch, offering participants three distance options through the masseira fields near Portugal’s coast. This trail race features mostly flat terrain, but the sand presents a unique challenge: soft sections can fatigue runners, split up packs, and influence final standings before the finish line. The route guides runners through a farming landscape uncommon in most trail races. Masseiras are rectangular plots cultivated within coastal dunes, with crops situated below the wind and protected by hedges on the ridges from the sea. This centuries-old local farming method defines the race's character, emphasizing unusual terrain, exposed sand, and a close observation of how the landscape was adapted for agriculture, rather than significant ascents or mountain vistas.
