Each February, Trilhos dos Abutres guides runners through the steep trails surrounding Miranda do Corvo and the Serra da Lousã in central Portugal. The series centers on mountain trail running, featuring an ultra of approximately 50 km with 2,500 m of elevation gain, a 30 km race with 1,425 m of climbing, and a mini trail of about 23 km with 844 m of gain. Shorter options and children's runs are available, including a youth event geared towards training.
The routes traverse the Lousã hills, emphasizing climbing, descending, and navigating rough terrain over flat roads. Abutres garners significant interest within Portuguese trail running, with entries in high demand. The races contribute to the UTMB Index and the ITRA National League, attracting competitive trail runners alongside local participants, club members, families, and younger athletes. The event has been a fixture in Portugal’s trail running community for roughly 15 years, and the Abutres initiative also covers Portugal’s first Trail Running Practice Center.
