Hammarby Alpin Marathon takes runners up, over, and around Hammarbybacken, an artificial ski hill south of central Stockholm. It is held on the first Advent Sunday, in winter conditions. The main race covers 22 laps on terrain, slightly longer than a standard marathon. Organizers refer to it as a “microultra” and “Sweden’s likely slowest marathon,” suitable for a race where climbing may be more important than pace. A 50 km option is also available.
The lap format keeps participants near the wind shelter in Barnbacken, the passage and finish area, allowing spectators to view the race without following it across town. The hill measures about 300-400 meters in length with an 85-meter rise. The initial ascent can be steep enough to require hands-and-feet scrambling in deep snow. Slush can create slippery conditions, making spiked shoes a practical choice, and some faster participants use poles. Stockholm Multisportklubb organizes it as an Advent event, fostering a small-field, race-community atmosphere where individuals connect with friends primarily encountered at events.
