Sandsjöbacka Trail is a winter trail-running weekend south of Gothenburg, with starts that have shifted between locations like Kållered, Kungsbacka, and Tjolöholm Castle. The event has used many distance formats over time, including shorter trail races around 30 to 37 km, long races around 50 to 60 km, ultra distances around 89 to 96 km, and at times a 180 km option. Runners can also enter a virtual version and run the distance wherever they are, while the on-site races use real courses with the route loaded into a watch.
The routes move through the Sandsjöbacka area rather than city streets: short road links lead into forest paths, open drumlin land, easy running sections, and winding technical trail. Some starts happen before dawn, and the longer races ask for self-reliance, with GPX navigation support, mandatory kit, aid stations, and strict time limits. The reserve covers about 4,182 hectares, has been protected since 1968, and belongs to the EU Natura 2000 network. The race draws both experienced ultra runners and recreational runners trying a new distance, and it also contributes to old-growth forest protection through its Trail Cred partnership.
