Peace Ridge Sanctuary’s 5k Run for the Animals & 1 Mile Fun Walk takes place on World Animal Day at the Northeast Equine Sanctuary, located on the Albion-Freedom border in Maine. The event’s purpose is direct fundraising for Peace Ridge Sanctuary’s ongoing rescue operations, covering food, care, medical treatment, and future rescues for animals that may include pets, wildlife, farm animals, horses, and ponies. The route follows sanctuary trails, winding alongside animal enclosures, allowing participants to pass through fields and forest with the rescued animals in proximity. The day is structured more as a sanctuary gathering than a typical road race. Activities include outdoor yoga and meditation before the start, Animal Yoga for children afterward, and a vegan BBQ served around midday. Sponsor tables, treats, giveaways, a raffle, corn-hole, scavenger hunts, face painting, opportunities to spend time with the horses, and vegan-friendly prizes for top fundraisers and 5K finishers complete the day.

The Waterville Marathon Running Festival starts and finishes at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine, offering four race options: a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. The event accommodates various runners, whether they aim for a 26.2-mile marathon, a 13.1-mile half, or a shorter road race. Pine Tree Racing Services provides timing, and the absence of a time limit makes the longer distances accessible for walkers and slower runners. The courses follow Route 104, venturing into the countryside near Waterville, Sidney, and Oakland before returning to Thomas College. Runners may leave personal bottles at the start-area operations tent, and these will be placed on a designated table at water stations. Maine Endurance Sports Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, organizes the event, which is undergoing USATF sanctioning and Boston certification. The festival also links to regional challenge medals, such as Run the Moose, Run the Highlands, and the Vacationland Triple Crown for participants completing specific race combinations.
