The Micro: Breaking 4
The Micro: Breaking 4 is a McKirdy Micro marathon held in Walker, Michigan, starting at 1415 Maynard Ave SW. Runners begin between 8 a.m. and noon Eastern. The series originated from a desire among runners to provide opportunities for marathoners aiming for personal bests, Boston qualifying times, and other demanding standards, particularly when fast race options were limited during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The race details specify the marathon distance but do not describe the route beyond the Walker venue. The Micro format attracts athletes globally to a focused, well-supported race environment. One elite version resulted in 48 Olympic Trials qualifiers, two Olympians, personal bests for 69% of participants, and second-best lifetime marathons for 85% of finishers. The series is expanding to include multiple distances, allowing runners outside the elite field to utilize the same fast-race conditions.
University of Michigan Health-West Grand Rapids Marathon
The University of Michigan Health-West Grand Rapids Marathon is a fall road race in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. The start and finish are located near the GVSU Pew Campus and Blue Bridge. It attracts approximately 4,500 to 5,000 participants, along with thousands of spectators. The event is designed for both novice marathoners and those aiming for a Boston qualifying time.
The course is known for being fast and flat, conducive to achieving personal bests. In a recent year, almost 20% of participants qualified for Boston. The race has a history spanning over twenty years. Its weekend activities feature an expo at the David D. Hunting YMCA, offering medical and wellness services, hands-only CPR demonstrations, and assistance from UM Health-West sports medicine. A Kids Marathon is also part of the event, catering to children aged 2 to 12. These young runners complete the final 1.2 miles of the full marathon distance, receiving a bib, shirt, and medal.
Grand Rapids Kids Marathon
The Grand Rapids Kids Marathon allows children ages 2 to 12 to complete a marathon incrementally, finishing on the Grand Rapids Marathon course. Children record 25 miles on a log sheet, counting each half mile of running or walking, or 15 minutes of activity, towards their goal. The concluding 1.2 miles take place on the Saturday preceding the main marathon. Each registered child receives a race bib and T-shirt, followed by a medal and certificate upon finishing.
The final run commences and concludes at the official Grand Rapids Marathon start/finish line, situated near the David D. Hunting YMCA, within the DeVos lot of GVSU in Grand Rapids. The series also offers families opportunities to engage in physical activity before race weekend, such as a Kickoff Run at Millennium Park and an Obstacle Course Run at John Ball Zoo. Family Capital Management sponsors the event, with Sara Merritt as race director.
the overGRound marathon/relay
The overGRound is a free, unsanctioned marathon and marathon relay in Grand Rapids, Michigan, starting in late October from Veterans Memorial Park. It is built around local running and fitness clubs rather than a formal race organization, and the relay allows teams to choose any lineup or leg distances they want. All paces are welcome, and participants are encouraged to bring their own bibs.
The route starts and finishes at Veterans Memorial Park and remains entirely within Grand Rapids city limits, making it the first known marathon to do that. It passes coffee shops, parks, city blocks, and various neighborhoods, with coffee shops suggested as natural relay change points. The event is mostly self-supported, but runners receive wayfinding assistance, aid stations, bike check-ins, and volunteers on course. Local clubs bring people out to run, cheer, and support the field, and every participant is greeted back at Veterans Park from first finisher to last.
White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay
The White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay begins in Comstock Park, Michigan, at the southern end of the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail. It takes place annually on the second Sunday in March. Teams of runners divide a marathon into two 13.1-mile segments. A solo full marathon is also available for those preferring to run the entire distance alone.
The course proceeds north on the White Pine Trail to Russel Road before returning south to the finish in Comstock Park. This is a functional early-spring trail race. The path is regularly cleared by Friends of the White Pine Trail, features minimal low-traffic road crossings, and provides parking and restrooms approximately every four miles. While the relay format emphasizes teamwork, the course still offers each participant a complete half marathon.
