Winona Forest Backyard Ultra takes place at the CCC Camp in Winona State Forest, near Mannsville, New York. Race headquarters, parking, toilets, aid, and the start/finish are all located in a single staging area. The race follows the backyard ultra format: each hour, runners begin a 4.167-mile loop. Anyone not finishing the loop and returning to the start corral before the next hour begins is eliminated. The race continues until only one runner remains, emphasizing a consistent, manageable pace over a single fast effort.
Runners may establish a small personal area near the start/finish where crew are permitted. Pacers are not allowed, and no aid can be given on the course. The hourly schedule is precise, with 3-minute, 2-minute, and 1-minute warnings before each new loop commences. All remaining runners must then depart for the next loop. The event designates progress with milestone names: one lap is "The Lapper," four laps exceed a half marathon, seven laps surpass a marathon, eight laps pass 50K, twelve laps reach 50 miles, and twenty-four laps achieve 100 miles. This setup suits those aiming for first-time distance goals, extended supported training, or runners interested in the potential of steady pacing.
