The Mighty Mississinewa Triathlon begins at Miami State Recreation Area in Peru, Indiana, with the swim taking place in Mississinewa Reservoir. This September multisport event offers Sprint, Olympic, and Half Iron triathlon distances, alongside duathlons, aquabikes, open-water swims, and two- or three-person relays for the Sprint and Olympic distances. The Sprint course covers a 500-yard swim, a 12.5-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run. The Olympic course includes a 1500-meter swim, a 25-mile bike ride, and a 6.2-mile run. The Half Iron course consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. The race is USAT sanctioned, chip timed, open to participants aged 12 and older for most events, and has a capacity of 1000 racers.
The course utilizes reservoir terrain instead of city streets. The bike segment features smooth, low-traffic paved roads and crosses the dam. The run course combines pavement, grass, and dirt paths. A previous participant described the Olympic race as clearly marked, with two loops for each discipline: swim, bike, and run. They also noted that wind can create choppy water conditions and increase the difficulty of the bike course, even on relatively flat sections. Race morning is efficient, with park entry before dawn, packet pickup and last-minute registration before the start, and a required briefing at the beach. Ruble Racing is the organizer, and all finishers receive medals, participants get shirts, and awards are presented for overall and age-group winners.
