Oak Flats Picnic Trails is a free, self-supported trail event held at the Oak Flats Group Picnic Area in Tijeras, New Mexico. Runners can choose loop options from 5k up to 30k. The event takes place in September, allows dogs, and limits participation to 70 people. Registration is required via UltraSignUp, despite the absence of an entry fee.
The setup is straightforward and traditional: routes are unmarked, requiring runners to use GPX files or a programmed GPS device. The course consists of a short loop (approx. 3.2 miles) and a long loop (approx. 6.2 miles), which can be combined. A picnic table at the start/finish serves as the aid station, providing water, electrolyte mix, and paper maps; participants must carry their own food and hydration. Runners check in and out at the table to record their distance and time, with rankings based on moving time. The trails are shared with horses, hikers, and bikers. Participants are asked to stay on trail, use the restrooms, clean up after dogs, and pack out trash or use provided bear-proof cans.
