The Rabid Squirrel is an 11-ish-mile trail run near Danbury, North Carolina, starting at a lake and finishing at Green Heron Ale House. It is short enough to sound approachable, but the route packs in about 1,600 feet of climbing, about 2,400 feet of descending, two rock scrambles, and roughly a third of a mile in the river.
The course uses natural terrain around river and rock features, with runners summiting the Knob of Moores, passing the Hour of Rock, and seeing the Stone Wolf along the way. Aid stations are planned at miles 2.3, 4.5, 5.5, 7, and 8.5, but runners need to sort out transport between the separate start and finish, with only limited volunteer shuttling. The race leans into its oddball personality: organizers mention nicknames, multiple mountains, a sanity exam, bonus miles, a snake-filled river, heat “as a skillet,” and describe the whole thing as “nuts! :)”
