Aachen sits on the Belgian and Dutch borders where the Ardennes rise steeply to the south and east. Running here means hilly terrain — the Lousberglauf tackles 5.5km of steep climbs through the city, and the Aachener Silvesterlauf on New Year's Eve covers 9km through mixed urban and forest sections. Cyclists face serious elevation change immediately: the Schwalbe-Tour Nordeifel and Rheinisches-Revier RTF both depart Aachen into the Eifel plateau (around 400–500m), with the Condor-Etappenfahrt stretching 400km across the hilly border region.
