Ludwigshafen sits on the Rhine's left bank across from Mannheim, with flat industrial terrain that favours cycling over running. The Schwetzinger Höllgrund Radmarathon and Federweiße-Tour attract serious cyclists who use the city as a base for longer routes into the Palatinate wine region and Odenwald hills 30–40km south, where elevation gains exceed 800m. Local running is confined mostly to Rhine towpath loops and parkrun-style events; the real cycling action is the spring and autumn centuries heading east and south from the Rhine valley floor.
