It is a 26.2-mile road marathon on asphalt, following the route connected to the legend of Phidippides carrying news of victory from Marathon to Athens. The first 12 kilometers are level, the next 19 kilometers traverse long, gentle hills, and the final 11 kilometers descend toward the city.
