Leiden is flat polder country on the Rhine, ideal for cycling on dedicated paths that crisscross the region — the Harbour Tour 140km ride connects the North Sea coast and inland waterways. Runners find the terrain monotonously level but fast; the local half-marathon circuit runs through quiet neighbourhoods and along the canal system. Cyclists dominate here: the Run Bike Marathon starts in the area, and the network of dikes and water routes make multi-day touring trips natural, especially south into Belgium.
