Deception Pass 50K & 25K is a winter trail race held at Deception Pass State Park near Oak Harbor, Washington. Runners cross the high bridge between Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands twice. The event offers a 50K ultramarathon and a 25K trail race, along with a free 1K Fun Run for children during the same weekend. The park surrounds the narrow saltwater channel that lends the race its name. The course winds through shoreline, forest, cliffs, bluffs, and hillier terrain within the compact coastal park.
The course crosses most of the park, descending to sea level and ascending above the water on narrow, winding trails. The bridge, situated approximately 180 feet above the pass, serves as a distinct landmark for the race, differing from a standard out-and-back course. The 50K involves roughly 4,300 feet of climbing and descending, supported by four aid stations. The 25K covers about 3,000 feet of elevation change on a shorter route with one aid station. Rainshadow Running notes these races are faster than some of their mountain events, yet the technical footing, sharp turns, steep gradients, and continuous terrain variations present a challenge. Official race photographer Takao Suzuki provides race photos at no charge and welcomes tips. The Trail Mix Fund assists BIPOC or LGBTQ+ runners facing financial barriers to registration by covering entry fees.
