The Canyonlands Half Marathon and 5 Mile takes runners through Moab, Utah, with red rock walls, Arches National Park, and the Colorado River nearby. This March road race offers two distances: a half marathon and a 5-mile run. Thousands of runners now participate in Moab, though the inaugural half marathon had just 22 finishers, one of whom was a dog.
The race begins at Sandy Beach on Scenic Byway 128 and concludes at Lions Park in Moab, with shuttles managing the point-to-point logistics. The course follows the Colorado River, running parallel to Arches National Park, highlighting the surrounding canyon country as a primary attraction. The route is USATF-certified, and Runner’s World UK featured Canyonlands in a piece on the world’s greatest races. Its origins date back to 1976, with the river consistently present from the first event to the significantly larger March field seen today.
