Death by 5k Tyler is a 24-hour trail running challenge held at the Blackjack camping area in Tyler State Park. Participants begin a new 5k loop every 2.5 hours, needing to complete each segment before the next commences. This cycle repeats ten times over a 24-hour period. The event intentionally maintains a small scale, limiting registration to 150 runners, with a waitlist established once capacity is reached. The course follows local dirt trails. Organizers note that each loop measures closer to 3.6 miles than a standard 5k. Expect terrain featuring rocks, roots, and potential mud. Mandatory lighting is required for the nighttime segments. Blackjack serves as the staging area between loops, offering space for runners to rest in vehicles or set up tents. Scheduled hot meals, snacks, water, and Gatorade are provided to sustain participants. Those who finish are awarded a coffin, a fitting memento for the race's theme.
