The New River Gorge Rim to Rim Race takes runners from one side of the gorge to the other, with the New River at the low point between them. This 6-mile road race occurs in May near Fayetteville, West Virginia, hosted by Active Southern West Virginia at Adventures on the Gorge. The format is straightforward yet demanding: descend into the gorge, cross the river, then ascend to the opposite rim. Walkers are welcome, provided they maintain a 20-minute mile pace during the road closure.
The course begins on the south side of the New River Gorge on Fayette Station Road, proceeding via Burma Road and Ames Heights Road before a brief trail segment to the finish. Runners should anticipate approximately 1,300 feet of descent, 1,300 feet of ascent, and a steep section reaching a 20% grade. Race morning begins at the finish area for participant check-in, followed by a bus transfer to the start line. The event concludes at the resort’s rim-side pool, featuring chip timing, medals, finish photos, an overlook photo opportunity, and a catered brunch above the gorge.
