The Newport News One City Marathon is a point-to-point road marathon held in Hampton Roads, Virginia, crossing the full length of Newport News. It begins at Newport News Park and concludes downtown near Newport News Shipbuilding. Runners are allotted seven hours to complete the certified 26.2-mile course, requiring an average pace of 16 minutes per mile. It is a Boston qualifier; in a recent event, approximately 16% of marathon finishers achieved qualifying times, ranking it among the top 20 Boston-qualifying events according to MarathonGuide.
The route winds through the Virginia Peninsula, passing parkland, waterways, and historic neighborhoods before concluding in the city’s shipbuilding area. Aid stations are positioned approximately every two miles, offering Gatorade at alternating stops, energy chews at select later points, and portable toilets at each station. Pace teams are provided for participants aiming for a specific finish time, and the race is restricted to marathoners aged 18 and older. Upon completion, runners receive a medal and may proceed to The Yard District for the One City Celebration.
