Athens Authentic Marathon 2026

The Athens Marathon begins in Marathon town and concludes within the all-marble Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, close to the Acropolis. This annual road race in Greece typically takes place in early November, covering the standard 42.195 kilometers on asphalt. The event is frequently referred to as “The Authentic” because it mirrors the original concept of the marathon: a run from Marathon to Athens. The course connects to the legend of Pheidippides, the ancient messenger who supposedly ran from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens to announce a Greek victory over the Persians. The contemporary race commences near the historical battlefield site and finishes in the stadium constructed for the first modern Olympic Games. This same route was also utilized for the Athens Olympic marathon, meaning participants are not merely running a city race but crossing the path most directly associated with the origin of the marathon distance.
