Team members receive a training shirt, a race-day shirt, a team shakeout run, a pre-race gathering, and access to a team tent in Charity Village. The Marine Corps Marathon relies on extensive volunteer support, with approximately 1,850 individuals assisting on race day. They distribute water, Gatorade, snacks, Band-Aids, medals, shirts, manage baggage, provide directions, and offer encouragement along the course.

Fowler initially proposed the concept as a Marine Corps Reserve Marathon, aiming for community outreach, recruiting, and providing local Marines a chance to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Charity runners, service members, club runners, and first-time marathoners all compete together.
