The Athora Bruges Marathon takes place in October in Bruges, Belgium, the capital of West Flanders. This annual city marathon features a fast, flat course, alongside a half marathon and an 8 km walk for those seeking a shorter event. Established in 2017, it has become one of Belgium’s most popular running events. The former name, Athora Great Bruges Marathon, is no longer in use.
Runners begin at ’t Zand, near the Bruges Concertgebouw, proceeding through the historic center before heading towards Damme and the Damse Vaart. The finish traditionally is located on Bruges’ Market Square, providing a distinct city-center conclusion instead of an out-of-town finish. Participation has increased significantly in recent editions, growing from approximately 7,000 runners to a sold-out capacity of 12,000. Athora Belgium is the primary sponsor, and the event supports Think Pink October, the international breast cancer awareness month.
