The Goitzsche-Marathon begins at Bitterfeld’s Stadthafen next to the Goitzsche lakes. The full marathon covers the standard 42.195 kilometers. This May running event is organized by Goitzsche Sport und Kultur e.V., and the field can reach about 2,800 participants. The program offers more than just the marathon: runners can choose a half marathon, a 10 km race, walking and Nordic walking options, a 4.2 km company or fun run, 10 x 4.2 km marathon relays, school races over 4.2 km and 2.1 km, and a 500 m Bambini run.
The course winds through the lake landscape around Bitterfeld and the Goitzsche area in central Germany. The race is thus connected to the water and former mining landscape, not solely to city streets. Beginners, club runners, company teams, children, walkers, and fast marathoners all participate during the event weekend. Special Olympics Sachsen-Anhalt also includes a 2.1 km SO Run for SO athletes within the marathon program. Rachid Soufi from Düsseldorf has won the race three times consecutively, and recent winning times are around 2:41 for men and just under 3:00 for women.
