The Berlin Silvesterlauf takes runners around and through Grunewald on New Year's Eve, offering the year's final run a forest setting instead of a city-street atmosphere. It ranks among Germany's larger New Year's Eve races, with a deliberately relaxed mood: participants attend for a sporty conclusion to the year or an initial push toward the next, frequently in costume.
The course crosses paths over Drachenfliegerberg and Teufelsberg, providing sufficient elevation changes to challenge runners and ample height for expansive views across Berlin. The downhill sections require steady footing and some technique, but the routes remain accessible, allowing costumed participants to still have a good time. Handcrafted costumes are particularly encouraged, contributing to the event's year-end party atmosphere rather than a formal competition.
