The Zig Zag Challenge is a timed run held at Brandon Country Park in Thetford Forest, utilizing a 5.3K loop instead of a set distance. Participants can select either a 6-hour event beginning at 9 am or a 4-hour event starting at 11 am, completing as many laps as possible within their chosen timeframe. Runners departing base camp before 5:59:59 are permitted to begin one final lap, potentially extending the total distance slightly past the scheduled end time.
The course consists of gravel paths and grass. The loop structure simplifies the event: complete a lap, pass the aid station, take a break if desired, and then decide to continue. Five laps equate to a standard half marathon, with six or seven laps extending this distance. Nine laps constitute the standard ultra distance, with a maximum of twelve laps achievable if time permits. This format is suitable for individuals aiming for their first 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or ultra, as well as those seeking a straightforward method to gauge their endurance.
