The Athens Marathon: The Authentic begins at the ancient battlefield in Marathon and concludes inside Athens’ Olympic Stadium. It is a 26.2-mile road marathon on asphalt, following the route connected to the legend of Phidippides carrying news of victory from Marathon to Athens.
The first 12 kilometers are level, the next 19 kilometers traverse long, gentle hills, and the final 11 kilometers descend toward the city. The race follows the original Athens marathon route, the same one used for the Athens Olympic marathon, offering runners a course rich in history: a battlefield start, a challenging middle section, and a stadium finish tied to the modern Olympic Games.
