About
The Fat Tire Classic Mountain Bike Race circles Lake Macbride near Solon, Iowa, offering 15-mile and 30-mile routes. This timed off-road challenge takes place in winter. The longer course typically takes the fastest riders two hours, while those at the back may take five to six hours. Sugar Bottom Bikes and the Solon Centennial Lions Club present the event, with all proceeds directed to charity.
The course incorporates tight pea gravel, smooth singletrack, sandy stretches, quick double track, steep snowmobile trails, hiking paths, and gravel roads. A significant attraction is trail access; many are bike-prohibited except for this race. The 30-mile event awards overall prizes for men and women, and a three-person team category requires all members to finish together. The 15-mile race features separate podiums for youth riders. Participants also receive a stop for bacon and beverages, indicative of the race's character.
