Marathon d'Empúries

The Marathon d'Empúries begins and ends at the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia-Empúries. Runners pass through the ancient Greek city before the official start. It typically takes place on the first Sunday of May in Empúries, on the Costa Brava, and features three distances: a marathon, a half marathon, and a 10 km race. The course is not promoted as the fastest; its appeal lies in running through a historically significant site with Greek and Roman connections, alongside the sea for much of the event. The route incorporates the urban areas of L'Escala and Sant Martí d'Empúries, offering views of the Bay of Roses. This bay is recognized by the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World with UNESCO endorsement. The L'Escala Town Hall sports department organizes the event, with assistance from the Catalan Athletics Federation. A local tradition involves an anchovy tasting for participants, a fitting element for L'Escala, much like the archaeology is for Empúries.
