The Pillars of Wisdom starts on the iconic Tan Track, which circles the Royal Botanic Gardens on the same smooth, sealed path many runners use for serious training. This is a monthly, straightforward time trial, not a large-scale event. VRR members, visitors, and beginners participate, running hard if they choose, with results posted online later.
Starting near Swan Street Bridge, the path winds through shaded, tree-lined areas and open stretches. You can see the city skyline, Yarra River, and parkland if you have a moment to look. The Anderson Street hill presents a challenge; the remainder of the course is flat to gently rolling and clearly marked. Expect cool winter weather, with crisp mornings and potential light rain or cloud cover, making shoes with good grip on wet surfaces advisable.
