Krug Castle Challenge
Die Krug Castle Challenge ist ein Spendenlauf mit Burg-Motto im Krug Park in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Dieser Stadtpark hat eine italienische Burg, Rosengärten, eine Lagune, Trails, Picknickplätze, Spielplätze und ein Amphitheater. Beim Rennen gibt es eine Measly Mile, einen Kinda 5k und einen 10k. Interessant ist, dass der "Kinda 5k" aus drei Runden besteht, die zusammen 4.08 miles ergeben. Man läuft Runden im Park, hat 20 Minuten Zeit pro Runde und muss jede Runde beenden, bevor man die nächste anfängt. Die normalen 1 mile-, 5k- und 10k-Rennen werden nicht gezeitet, weil es hauptsächlich ums Spendensammeln geht.
Die Umgebung des Parks prägt den Charakter des Rennens stark. Der Krug Park ist Saint Josephs ältester Park; Henry Krug hat das Land ursprünglich für die öffentliche Nutzung gespendet, aber mit Auflagen gegen Alkohol und Glücksspiel. Die Strecke ist beleuchtet, und je nach Jahreszeit gibt es vielleicht sogar Weihnachtsbeleuchtung. Läufer sollten eine Stirn- oder Körperlampe mitbringen, falls sie nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit noch auf der Strecke sind. Wer den 5k oder 10k schafft, bekommt eine Erinnerungsmedaille, und wer mehr als 10k läuft, kann eine Challenge-Medaille kriegen. Der letzte Teilnehmer, der in den Kategorien King, Queen und Nonbinary übrig bleibt, wird als "Royalty" ausgerufen, egal wie viele Runden man geschafft hat. Der Großteil der Einnahmen geht an das St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Wir Locals bleiben beim Laufen gerne in der Nähe der Parks, des Flusses und der alten Viertel. Der Civic Center Park ist Dreh- und Angelpunkt am Marathontag, denn der St. Joseph Marathon startet und endet direkt dahinter, mit 5K, 10K, Halbmarathon- und Marathon-Optionen. Das Pony Express Museum bietet dem Pony Express 5k einen vertrauten Start- und Zielbereich. Die Bode Ice Arena ist Gastgeber des Hat Trick Trot 5K. Die Strecke bietet 5 km Singletrack und überwindet 42 m Anstieg und 27 m Abstieg. Diese Strecke ist auch an Intervalltagen noch super.
Horizon Cycling ist das Herzstück der Radszene hier, den Laden gibt es schon seit 2012. Der St. Joseph Bicycle Club ist eine super Anlaufstelle für uns Radfahrer, und die St Joseph Trail Alliance ist immer wieder auf den Trails unterwegs. Gravel fahren wir Locals auf dem 20 Miler, dem Southern Buchanan County 100k, der Easton Road Ride, der Kansas Bluff Route und dem Horizon Gravel Gran Fondo 100K. Die RIGA-P03 führt von St Joseph nach Marysville, 124 miles auf asphaltierter, beidseitig befahrbarer Straße, mit 2,807 m Anstieg und 2,808 m Abstieg. Im Süden geht es dann für uns weiter Richtung Rock Island Trail und Katy Trail.
Der Herbst bietet das beste Trainingsfenster, weil das Wetter in Missouri sonst ziemlich unberechenbar sein kann. Im Sommer sammeln wir unsere base miles und machen Ende Sommer oder Anfang Herbst eine Schnitzeljagd auf dem Rad. Am Corby Pond trifft sich die Mountainbike-Gruppe fast jeden Dienstagabend, das ganze Jahr über. Im Dezember gibt es den Christmas Light Ride, da verschwinden die Räder auch im Winter nicht ganz. Horizon Cycling hat im Februar einen Wartungs-Open-House, und die Zeit nutzen wir Locals für Reparaturen, Z2 rides, Laufband-Kilometer und kurze Trail-Checks, wenn der Untergrund es zulässt.
