The Ultimate Rail Trail Experience takes place on old railroad grades in western Montana, with race logistics based in St. Regis. This is a trail-style race series on wide dirt and gravel rail beds, distinct from steep mountain singletrack or pavement road races. Participants can collect full race packets on Friday afternoon at the St. Regis Community Center. Saturday morning pickup at the St. Regis Travel Center is restricted to bibs only, prior to shuttle departures.
The course follows rail beds formerly used by the Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Railroads. The terrain consists mainly of dirt and gravel, with a gentle grade that does not exceed 2%. This should offer a smoother and softer surface compared to technical trail running or asphalt. The railroad history is central to the event; runners traverse corridors built for trains, with shuttles transporting them to the starting points and unclaimed shirts and merchandise available at the finish.
